Major Borrowers Back Government-Initiated Program on Foreclosures
Sacramento has announced its support of plans aimed at reworking foreclosures. The city was reported to have had 30,000 foreclosed homes in its area. Thus, it moved to back the proposed plan spearheaded by the US government.
Aside from the support that it got, the government’s plan proved to be successful as Citigroup Inc. has announced its participation in the program. The bank joined the ranks of financial giants that have promised to help their borrowers handle their soon-to-be foreclosure properties.
The reworking plans that banks have proposed employ several ways to help their borrowers. One thing is common though, all of the lenders will require borrowers to allot less than 38% of the latter’s monthly income to pay for their mortgages. The proposed plans are also said to cover offerings of lower interest rates and deferred principal amount payments.
Last Tuesday, the government, in an attempt to encourage participation, announced that starting on the 15th of December mortgage servicers will receive $800 for each successful loan modification they had. The loan rewrite must be able to bring payments that are under 38% of the borrower’s monthly income. Qualified mortgage servicers will receive the payment from the federal government.
The housing market was suddenly put to the limelight because of the growing concerns on the industry. Reports say that, in recent weeks, there has been an accumulated damage of 3 million foreclosures in the country. A lot of analysts also believe that the rise in the number of foreclosure properties has also contributed to the current national economic recession.
